I learned about this book after listening last Friday to Tom Hall’s Midday conversation with Eric Holder about his new book, Our Unfinished March: A History, a Crisis, a Plan on WYPR. I recommend listening to the broadcast.
Mr. Holder’s history of voting in the US since its beginnings is compelling and entertaining. Some women were voting in the colonies long before the 20th amendment. For instance, in Massachusetts, because Native American women were part of decision-making in some tribes, both indigenous and white women voted, and a “typo” of ‘they’ instead of ‘he’ in the 1776 New Jersey constitution allowed both women and men to vote. Who knew?! And we thought the Ladies in Still Pond were among the first voters!
Mr. Holder, in the interview, said, the vote is the essential right for democracy to succeed, and Democracy is on the ballot in this election.
