DCKC Meeting: Democratic Backsliding in Central America

The public is invited to attend the April 16 meeting of the Democratic Club of Kent County at which Washington College political scientist, Dr. Christine Wade, will speak on “Democratic Backsliding in Central America.”

Dr. Wade will discuss the challenges that Central America’s new democracies faced after civil wars ended in the region. With a legacy of authoritarianism, pervasive poverty, and weak institutions, the new democracies faced a wave of corruption and violent crime. As a result, Central America is experiencing democratic backsliding which threatens regional stability, undermines the rule of law, and imperils human rights.

Dr. Wade chairs the political science department and is the Louis L. Goldstein Professor of Public Affairs.

The meeting, open to the public, will be held at Sumner Hall, 206 S. Queen St. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. There will be a brief club business meeting from 6:45-7 p.m., with the program beginning at 7:00 p.m. and ending no later than 8:30 p.m.
