And here is some initial commentary on Ballot Question #5 from our colleague Jared Schablein of the Lower Shore Progressive Caucus:

Fellow Progressives,

This year, a dangerous amendment is on the ballot disguised as a harmless amendment pertaining to Howard County.

Despite serious efforts to mislead voters by special interests, Ballot Question 5 isn’t just about Howard County, and we need everyone to vote AGAINST IT when they get their ballot this year.

Here are the facts:

  • This ballot question WASN’T requested by the people. Instead, politicians demanded it with a personal grudge against the retired members of the court in Howard County and special interest groups.
  • This ballot question IS Not based on truth.
  • This ballot question would take away our right to vote on who oversees our important probate court that presides over the administration of estates.
  • This ballot question would be used to abolish the Orphans’ Court statewide.  Question 5 would be nothing short of a disaster, and a severe blow to our judiciary system for the benefit of special interest groups.  Our Circuit Courts are already overwhelmed.  They can’t handle the additional burden this would cause.

Ballot Question 5 is nothing short of a dangerous power grab that must be stopped!  That is why we need your help spreading the word in the community.

If you are interested in learning more about the Orphan’s Court and why we must oppose this amendment, please watch our town hall with LSPC recommended candidate, Melissa Pollitt Bright who is the chief judge of the Wicomico County Orphan’s Court here:

Make sure to tell everyone you know: this November, Vote NO on Ballot Question 5.

In Solidarity,
