Join us on the evening of Thursday, June 16 at Sumner Hall (206 S. Queen St., Chestertown) as the club hosts four candidates for the Kent County Board of Education. Doors open at 6:30 pm for this in-person meeting, with a brief business meeting at 6:45, and the program starting at 7 pm.
Our speakers that evening will include (candidate info derived from brief bio information submitted to Vote 411):
- Aretha Dorsey of Chestertown. She attended the KCPS system as did her children and grandchildren. After graduation, she is now a certified Senior Cosmetologist. She has an Associate degree in Theology, and is currently running two self-owned businesses. She has served the community on several committees, including the SACRJ along with several subcommittees including Educational and Community.
- Piers Heriz-Smith of Millington. He was born in England, and immigrated to the US in 1974, as a five-year-old. Growing up in Appalachia Pennsylvania he worked on a farm and studied meteorology/climatology before joining and serving 23 years in the USAF Medical Service. His last duty was Program Manager, Medical Logistics, responsible for all homeland response medical materiel in the Command, and training several hundred Airmen in two career fields.
- Nivek Johnson of Chestertown. He was born and raised in Chestertown, Maryland and was educated in the Kent County and Queen Anne’s public school systems. He has a BA Degree from Salisbury University, and attained his Master’s in Education from Bowie State University in 2022. He is a Public School Computer Science/Tech Ed Teacher in Montgomery County. Currently, he is the Vice President of the Kent County Board of Education.
- Chuck Welsh of Millington. He and his family live in Millington, Maryland. His wife currently is a teacher at Queen Anne’s County High School, where their son graduated in 2021. He has a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degrees in Secondary Education in Mathematics. He is currently serving as the Mathematics Chair for the ECHS@DSU. He has been teaching for 25 years in MD and DE.
