No matter our color, background, or zip code, in America we value our freedom — the freedom to have a say in decisions that impact our lives, from curbing the pandemic to creating jobs to making health care affordable. But now the same factions — who have endangered our lives with lies about COVID and the 2020 election, passed anti-voter bills in multiple states, and tried to block an investigation into the attack on our Capitol — are refusing to pass a law which the majority of Americans favors. This is a turning point for our nation. Our Senate leaders must exercise their majority, eliminate the filibuster, and pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act to create national standards to ensure that we can safely and freely cast our ballots, ensure that trusted local election officials count every vote, and prevent partisan politicians from sabotaging the results of our elections.
The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act would standardize voting election laws across the country and would significantly expand voting access, including reversing the effects of dozens of new state-level voting restrictions passed this year. The bill addresses political gerrymandering as well. It would also restore key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that have been struck down or weakened by the Supreme Court, and change the way federal courts handle election cases.
Call our U.S. Senators and make our voices heard. Large phone call counts, even in blue states, are tools our Senators use to pass urgent legislation. The number to call is (202) 224-3121. Our U.S. Maryland Senators are Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen. Ask for their extensions and you will be transferred where you can leave a message of support for this Congressional action. YES, they are both voting for it but our support makes it more powerful.
